How do I prepare for my HSG?
HSG requires very few preparations. The Gen 5 Fertility Center team might recommend taking over-the-counter pain medications an hour before the procedure to ensure you remain comfortable. Some people may benefit from antibiotic treatment before their HSG.
Timing is important with HSG. You need to undergo the procedure during the first half (days 1-14) of your menstrual cycle. That reduces the risk of undergoing the procedure when you’re pregnant.
What happens during an HSG?
The HSG procedure is straightforward and shouldn’t cause discomfort. You lie on your back as you would for a pelvic exam, and your provider opens your vagina with a speculum.
They clean and numb the cervix, which could cause a slight pinching sensation. Then, your provider passes a cannula (slim, flexible tube) through the opening. Your provider puts you under an X-ray machine. They slowly fill your uterus with the dye and take the X-rays.
Your provider discusses the findings of the HSG with you and advises on any treatment you need.
